Bruna Pandolpho

is a doctoral researcher working in Morelia Urlaub’s working group at GEOMAR under a DAAD scholarship since 2020. Bruna’s Ph.D. research project focuses on salt tectonics deformation of the seafloor offshore Mount Etna, Ionian basin, Italy.

Her Ph.D. aims to better understand seafloor geomorphology (changes in sedimentation, erosion, faulting, and adjacent subsidence) deformation in order to investigate salt presence and activity in deep-water basins.

Salt, unlike other rocks, is mechanically weak, has relatively low density, is almost incompressible, and exhibits a viscous behavior. These distinct characteristics are responsible for salt easily rising and deforming or cutting off the sediment above it.

A reason why understanding salt presence and activity in deep-water basins has, besides its relevance for the oil and gas industry, an important role for the analyses of slope stability. Geohazards worldwide result from the steeper slopes as well as fractured and unstable sediments that are caused by underlain salt.

Having the Messinian Salinity Crisis, widely known, as background for her studies in the Ionian Basin, Bruna aims to use more vastly available and affordable data such as bathymetric data and high-resolution seismic data to develop geomorphometric proxies for the rate of salt uplift and its temporal changes, providing important tools to unveil its growth/flux and evolution.

Prior to arriving in Germany, Bruna graduated in Geophysics at the University of Brasilia (2016) and did her Master’s in Oceanography at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (2020), where she worked with 2D seismic data and seismic attributes to investigate deep-water depositional processes, especially mixed systems with turbidites and contourites. During this period, she had the opportunity to work as an intern at CENPES/Petrobras (Centro de Pesquisas Leopoldo Américo Miguez de Mello).
